Traumatic brain injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when your brain gets hurt really badly because you had a hit on your head, such as a fall or an accident. Imagine your brain is like a soft, squishy ball that is inside of your skull, which is like a hard shell. When you get a hit on your head, your brain can get banged around inside your skull and become damaged. This can cause problems like headaches, dizziness, not being able to remember things, and having a hard time thinking clearly.

Sometimes, a TBI can cause more serious problems for your brain, like bleeding or swelling. This can put pressure on your brain and cause even more damage. If you have a TBI, you might need to go to the doctor or hospital to get special help to make your brain feel better. Doctors can help by giving you medicine, giving your brain time to rest, or even doing surgery if it's really bad.

It's important to make sure you wear helmets or other protective gear when you play sports or ride a bike to help keep your head safe. And if you ever hit your head really hard or start feeling strange after a hit, be sure to tell a grown-up so they can help take care of you.
