ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Trompe

Trompe is a big word that describes a special type of building that's really good at keeping things cool. You might have seen them in hot places like deserts or really sunny countries.

So, imagine you were building a big house in a really hot place. You would want the inside of your house to be nice and cool so that you feel good and are not sweating all the time.

One way of doing this is to build something called a trompe. A trompe is a big tower or a hole in the ground that goes deep, deep down into the earth. Inside the trompe, there is a big room that's underground, kind of like a basement.

In this room, there is special cool air that comes up from the deep, deep hole in the earth. The air is nice and cold because it's been down there for a long time, and it hasn't been touched by the hot sun.

Now, remember how heat rises and cold goes down? Well, that's how the trompe works too. The cool air from the trompe sinks down into the house, while the hot air rises and goes up and out of the windows or vents. This way, your house stays nice and cool, even in the hottest weather.

So, that's what a trompe is! It's a cool, special building that helps you stay comfortable in really hot weather.
