ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Truncated octahedron

A truncated octahedron is a shape made of 14 faces. Imagine having a big cube and then cutting off the corners so that each corner gets flattened a bit, but not all the way. You end up with a shape that looks almost like a rounded cube. But instead of having six faces (like a cube), it now has 14 faces.

Each of these faces is shaped like a regular hexagon - which means it has six sides that are all the same length and look like little “u” shapes. If you count up all the sides in a truncated octahedron, you will find that there are 72 sides in total!

The shape has a total of 24 corners, where 3 sides meet. If you look at the shape from certain angles, it can look like you’re seeing a hexagon, but if you look from a different angle, it might look like a square or even a triangle.

This shape is used in lots of different ways, including in some types of dice, salt crystals, and even certain molecules! If you ever need to make something with a special shape, the truncated octahedron might be just what you’re looking for!
