A tuning fork is a tiny metal instrument that looks like a small, straight, and slender fork. When you hit it, it vibrates really quickly and makes a sound. It is used to help tune musical instruments like a guitar, piano, or violin.
Imagine you have a guitar that is a little bit out of tune. You can use the tuning fork to help get the right pitch or note for the guitar string. First, you hit the tuning fork against something hard, like a table. This makes the two prongs of the fork vibrate back and forth very quickly. The sound the fork makes will be the same every time, meaning it will have the same pitch or note every time you hit it.
Then, you hold the vibrating tuning fork close to the guitar string you want to tune, and the sound wave from the fork will make the guitar string vibrate too! Once the guitar string starts vibrating at the same speed as the tuning fork, it will also make the same sound, and you’ll know it’s in tune.
Tuning forks are also used in science to help measure sound waves and in medicine to check a person’s hearing by placing the tuning fork near their ear. So, even though the tuning fork is small, it is a very useful tool in many areas of life!
