ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Uniform civil code

Okay, so imagine if every kid in your class got to make up their own rules and follow them. One kid might say they only wear yellow on Wednesdays, and another might say they can eat dessert before dinner. It would be pretty confusing, right?

Well, grown-ups in India have a similar problem. There are lots of different religions and groups in India, and they all have their own rules about things like marriage, divorce, and property rights. This can make things very complicated when people from different groups want to get married, for example.

So some people think it would be better if everyone in India followed the same rules for these things, instead of different rules for different groups. That's where the idea of a "uniform civil code" comes in.

Basically, this means having one set of laws that applies to everyone in India, no matter what religion or group they belong to. This would make things like marriage and property rights fairer and simpler for everyone.

But not everyone agrees on what these laws should be. Some religious groups want to keep their own rules, while others want to make sure everyone follows the same laws. It's a complicated issue, but it's an important one for making sure India is fair and equal for everyone.
