ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Urban canyon

Okay kiddo, imagine you're walking between two big buildings that are really close together, like they're giving you a giant hug! That's what we call an urban canyon, because it feels like you're walking through a narrow canyon like you might see in a big mountain range, except instead of mountains, you're walking between skyscrapers in a city.

Now, when you're walking in this urban canyon, you might notice that it feels different than walking on a regular street. That's because the buildings are so close together that they create these big walls of concrete and glass all around you. This can make it feel cooler in the summer because the sun doesn't reach you as much, but it can also make it feel much windier and colder in the winter because the wind gets trapped between the buildings.

Urban canyons are really interesting because they can affect the way that things like air pollution and traffic move through the city. Because everything is so close together, the wind can't blow things away as easily, and you might notice that the air feels stuffier in an urban canyon than it does on an open street. This is why some cities try to plant more trees and other greenery in their urban canyons, to help clean the air and make it feel fresher for people walking through.

So there you have it, kiddo - an urban canyon is like a big, narrow hallway made of buildings, and it can affect things like the wind, temperature, and air quality in a city. Cool, huh?
