Uterine inversion

Uterine inversion is a big term used when a woman's uterus (which is a big muscle) turns itself inside out, like a sock. Imagine your sock getting turned inside out while you're wearing it. That's what happens to the uterus in this case.

When a woman gives birth, her uterus shrinks and goes back to its original size. However, sometimes, the uterus doesn't shrink back and come out of the vagina like it should. Instead, the uterus turns itself inside out and comes out through the vagina.

Uterine inversion can be dangerous because the blood vessels that are attached to the uterus can get twisted and cut off, which can cause heavy bleeding. If not treated quickly, it can be life-threatening.

Doctors and nurses keep a close eye on women after birth to make sure that their uterus goes back to its original size and doesn't invert. If a woman experiences heavy bleeding or something doesn't feel right, she should tell her healthcare provider right away.
