ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

V formation

Have you ever seen birds flying together in a V-shape? That's called a V formation. It's like a group of friends holding hands, except these birds don't have hands, so they use their wings instead!

The bird at the front of the V shape is called the leader. It's strong and knows how to fly really well, so the other birds follow it. The other birds fly behind the leader, and they all flap their wings at the same time. This helps them all save energy because they don't have to work as hard to stay in the air.

Now, you may be wondering why birds fly in a V formation. Well, there are lots of reasons! For one, it helps them fly long distances without getting as tired. And when they're flying over a long distance, they take turns being the leader so no one bird gets too exhausted.

Another reason is that it helps the birds stay close together so they can communicate with each other. They tweet and chirp to each other, so they can stay connected and know where everyone else is.

So the next time you see some birds flying in a V formation, remember that they're helping each other out and working together to reach their destination!
