Vancouver special

A Vancouver Special is a type of house that was built in Vancouver, Canada in the 1960s and 1970s. These houses are called "special" because they are unique to Vancouver and are different from other house styles that existed at the time.

Imagine building a house out of building blocks. Vancouver Specials have two stories or levels, like stacking two sets of blocks on top of each other. The bottom level has a garage, a living room, and a kitchen. The top level has bedrooms and bathrooms.

Vancouver Specials have a special shape too. Imagine taking a rectangle and adding a triangle on top of it. The triangle is called a gable roof because it looks like the letter "A" when you look at it from the side. The gable roof gives Vancouver Specials a distinct look that is easy to recognize.

These houses became very popular because they were cheaper to build than other styles of houses in Vancouver. They were also built quickly and could fit many people in a small space. As a result, many families who wanted to live in Vancouver were able to buy Vancouver Specials and call them home.

Today, many Vancouver Specials are still standing and have become a part of Vancouver's architectural history. Some people love them, while others don't like their boxy shape. Either way, Vancouver Specials are a special part of Vancouver's past and present.
