ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Velthuis

Okay kiddo, so Velthuis is a special way of writing numbers and letters that is different from the way we usually write them. It was created by a man named Peter Velthuis who wanted to make a way of writing that was easy to read by computers.

Instead of the usual letters and numbers we see, Velthuis uses a series of dots and lines that look kind of like Morse code. Each dot and line represents a different letter or number.

So for example, the letter A in Velthuis looks like this: •_. That little dot and line mean A. And the number 5 looks like this: •••___. Those dots and lines mean 5.

It might seem confusing at first, but computers can easily read and understand this way of writing. Plus, it can be useful for things like coding and cryptography. So that's what Velthuis is all about, making a special way of writing that computers can easily understand.
