ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vertical replenishment

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes when you go to the grocery store with mom or dad, they need to get something that's up high on a shelf? And it's hard for them to reach it without a ladder or stool?
Well, think about it like that but on a really, really big scale. Sometimes on ships and boats, they need to get supplies and equipment from one ship to another or from the shore to the ship, but there's no easy way to do it. So they came up with something called vertical replenishment.
This means that a helicopter will come and hover over the ship or boats, and then lower down a special basket or sling that can hold things like food, water, parts, tools, and even people. The crew on the ship will then be able to grab what they need from the basket, like mom grabbing cereal off a high shelf. It's a really efficient way to get everything they need without having to dock the ship and transfer everything that way. Plus, it looks pretty cool too, don't you think?
