ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vertigo

Hi there, little one! So, have you ever felt like the whole world around you is spinning like a merry-go-round? That's what we call vertigo.

You have a special part in your inner ear called the vestibular system, which helps you keep your balance and know which way is up or down. Sometimes, things can go wrong with this system and you might feel dizzy or off-balance. This feeling can make you feel like you might fall or even make you feel sick to your tummy.

Vertigo can happen for many different reasons. One common cause is an infection, like a cold or the flu. Other causes could be problems with your ear or brain, certain medications, or even some medical conditions like high blood pressure.

If you ever feel like the world is spinning around you, it's best to tell a grown-up so they can help you see a doctor who can figure out what's going on and help you feel better. In the meantime, try to sit or lie down and close your eyes until the spinning feeling goes away.
