Vexillarius

Okay kiddo, do you know what a flag is? It's a colorful piece of cloth that represents a country or a group of people. In ancient Rome, they also had flags called vexilla that were used to represent their army.

Now, a vexillarius was a special person in the Roman army whose job was to carry and protect the vexilla during battles. Just like how you take care of your favorite toy, the vexillarius had to make sure that the flag didn't get damaged or lost in the chaos of war.

The vexillarius would march in front of the soldiers carrying the vexilla on a big pole. This made it easy for the rest of the army to see where they were supposed to go and what they were fighting for.

The vexillarius was a very important person because the vexilla symbolized the honor and pride of the Roman army. Even if they were losing a battle, the vexillarius had to make sure that the flag was saved and protected.

So just like your favorite toy needs to be taken care of, the vexilla needed a special person to protect it, and that's what a vexillarius was in ancient Rome.
