Victorian literature is writing from the period in history between 1837 and 1901 when Queen Victoria was the ruler of England. During this time, writers wrote stories, poems and plays that explored ideas about the changing world, especially the differences between the upper and lower classes of society. Writers like Charles Dickens wrote about characters who were poor and often in difficult situations, like Oliver Twist. Alfred Tennyson's poetry explored ideas of love, nature and death. Many of the writings from this period still shape how we see and talk about the world today.
