ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vietnamese name

Okay kiddo, Do you remember the name you have, right? Just like that, Vietnamese people also have names. Vietnamese names are different from the names you usually hear in the United States.

Vietnamese names have three parts: the family name, the middle name, and the given name.

The family name comes first and it’s passed down from your parents or grandparents. So, if your grandpa's last name was Nguyen, then your dad's last name is Nguyen, and your last name will also be Nguyen. Many Vietnamese people have the same last name because there are only a few common last names in Vietnam.

The middle name comes next. It usually represents the generation of the family. For example, if your dad's middle name is Minh, then your middle name might be Thuy to represent your generation.

Lastly, the given name is the name your parents choose for you. It can be anything they like, as long as it's not offensive.

So, let’s say your name is Nguyen Thuy Linh, Nguyen is your family name, Thuy is your middle name, and Linh is your given name.

It might seem a bit confusing at first, but Vietnamese people really love their names and take pride in them. It’s a special part of their culture!
