ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vignette (literature)

A vignette in literature is like a little picture or snapshot of a moment or experience. It is a short piece of writing that gives you a glimpse into someone's life, without telling you the whole story. It's like looking at a photograph that captures just one moment in time.

For example, let's say you go on vacation to the beach. You might take a photo of the beach, but you might also take a photo of your little brother building a sandcastle or your mom reading a book. Those photos are like vignettes because they capture just one moment in time, but they give you a sense of what it was like to be there.

In literature, a vignette can be a part of a larger story or it can also stand alone as its own little story. It doesn't have to have a beginning, middle, and end like a traditional story. Instead, it just gives you a peek into a character's life and helps you understand their experiences and emotions better.
