Virgin soil epidemic

A virgin soil epidemic is when a disease is introduced to a community or population that has never been exposed to it before. It is called a "virgin soil" epidemic because it spreads quickly among the people because they have no immunity or defense against it. For example, when colonists first arrived in the Americas, diseases like smallpox spread quickly and killed many people, since the Native Americans had no immunity to the disease.
