Voiced dental fricative

Okay kiddo, so you know how our mouth has different parts, like our lips and our teeth? Well, the voiced dental fricative is a sound we make by putting our tongue really close to our front teeth and blowing out air.

It’s called “voiced” because we use our vocal cords to make it, and “fricative” because the air coming out of our mouth makes a little bit of friction with our teeth.

If you put your tongue where your front teeth are and blow out air, you might hear a sound like “thhh” or “thee”. That’s the voiced dental fricative! It’s a sound we use a lot in English when we say words like “this” or “that”.

Some other languages, like Spanish or French, also have this sound, but they say it a little bit differently.
