Volcanic gas

Volcanic gas is the stuff that comes out of a volcano. When a volcano erupts, it spews out a lot of different things like hot molten rock called lava, ash, and volcanic gases.

Now imagine you are blowing bubbles into a cup of soda with a straw. The gas coming out of the straw is like the volcanic gas. But instead of just air, the gas coming from the volcano is made up of different gases like water vapor, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen.

When there is a lot of volcanic gas, it can be very dangerous for people living near the volcano. The gases can make it hard to breathe, and they can also combine with water vapor in the air to make acid rain.

Scientists study volcanic gas to learn more about what is happening inside the volcano. By measuring the amount and type of gas coming out of the volcano, they can predict when it might erupt again and how big the eruption could be.
