ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fumarole

Okay, so imagine a big pot of soup on the stove. As the soup heats up, steam comes out of it, right? Well, sometimes in nature, there are places where the ground heats up a lot and makes steam come out of the ground instead of a pot. We call those places fumaroles.

It's like a big, hot, natural tea kettle that's brewing underground. The heat can come from a lot of different sources, like volcanoes or hot rock formations. When the water underground gets really hot, it turns into steam and tries to escape.

So if you ever go to a place with fumaroles, you might see clouds of steam or even hear hissing sounds as the steam rushes out of the ground through cracks and holes. It can be pretty cool, but you have to be careful not to get too close, because the steam can be really, really hot!
