ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Volume fraction

Imagine that you have a glass of water and a glass of juice. The volume fraction is like how much of each liquid you have in your glass. So, if you pour half of the glass with water and half with juice, then you have a volume fraction of 50% water and 50% juice.

Volume fraction is a way to describe how much of one substance is present in a mixture compared to other substances. It's like a recipe where you need to have a certain amount of each ingredient to make the final product.

Let's say you have a mixture of sand and water. The volume fraction of sand would be the amount of sand compared to the total volume of the mixture. If you have a cup of sand mixed with a cup of water, the volume fraction of sand would be 50%.

Volume fraction is really useful in science and engineering, because it can help describe the properties of materials. For example, if you have a material that is 80% steel and 20% plastic, its properties will be different than a material that is 20% steel and 80% plastic.

So, volume fraction is like a way to describe how much of one thing is in a mixture compared to other things. By understanding volume fraction, scientists and engineers can better understand and create materials with specific properties.
