ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Vrata

Imagine you have a big gate in front of your house that stops people or cars from coming in without your permission. A vrata is like a gate but for your mind and soul, instead of your house.

In some religions, vrata means a solemn promise or vow that people take to keep themselves pure and devoted to their beliefs. They may do this by fasting, praying, performing rituals, or abstaining from certain activities for a period of time.

For example, during Navratri, Hindus observe a vrata by fasting for nine days in honor of the divine feminine power. This is believed to strengthen their devotion, purify their mind and body, and bring them closer to their deity.

Just like a gate protects your house from unwanted visitors, vrata protects your mind and soul from negative influences and distractions. It helps you focus on your spiritual goals and deepen your connection to your faith.
