A water well is like having your own personal drinking fountain in your backyard!
Underneath the ground, there are big rocks and sand that hold water, called an aquifer. A water well is like a straw that goes down into the ground to reach this water.
First, a big hole is dug in the ground, and then a special pipe called a well casing is put in the hole. This pipe keeps the walls of the hole from caving in and protects the well from dirt, bugs, and animals.
Next, a drill goes down the pipe and makes a hole in the ground. Sometimes they use a jackhammer to break up the rock underground. Pumping mud is used to carry dirt and rock pieces to the surface to be cleaned and taken away.
After the drill makes the hole deep enough, a pump is put in the bottom of the well casing to help get the water to the surface. A pipe is then attached to the pump so that the water can travel all the way up to the top of the well.
Finally, a special cap is put on top of the well casing to keep out rainwater and dirt. And just like that, a water well is born!
