ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Well-founded relation

A well-founded relation is when you have a bunch of things, and you can put them in order from top to bottom, with the very best thing at the very top and the not-so-good things at the bottom. This is like building a tower, where you put the biggest blocks at the bottom, and the smaller blocks on top.

A well-founded relation is special because it means that, no matter how many things you have, you will always be able to put them in order from good to bad without getting stuck, or without having two things be the exact same amount of good.

This is important in lots of areas, like math or computer science or even in everyday life, where we need to decide on the best thing to do or the best option to choose. By using a well-founded relation, we can make sure we always find the best option and that we don't get stuck trying to figure it out.
