ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Wellerism

Alright kiddo, have you ever heard someone say a phrase like "Every dog has its day," and then someone else adds a funny twist to it like "but some dogs have to wait longer for theirs!"? That's something called a wellerism.

A wellerism is a type of saying or phrase that usually has two parts: the first part is something that people have heard before, like a proverb or a cliché. The second part is a little joke or pun that gives the well-known saying a different meaning or makes it funnier.

For example, a wellerism might go like this: "Practice makes perfect," said the piano teacher. "Then I should be perfect by now," replied the student.

See, the first part of the wellerism, "practice makes perfect," is a common expression that means if you keep practicing something, you'll get better at it. But the second part of the wellerism, "then I should be perfect by now," is a joke because it suggests the student has practiced so much that they should already be perfect at playing the piano.

People have been making wellerisms for a long time - even before you were born! They're a fun way to play with language and add some humor to an otherwise boring saying. So if you hear someone say something that sounds like a well-known phrase but with a funny twist, you can bet it's probably a wellerism. Keep your ears peeled for them!
