ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Were

"WERE" is a special word that we use when we are talking about something that happened in the past or in situations that are imaginary.

For example, if we want to talk about yesterday, we might say "I WERE at the park yesterday." That means that in the past, I was at the park.

We can also use "WERE" when we are imagining something. For example, if you were playing make-believe with your friends and pretending to be a pirate, you might say "We WERE sailing the high seas!" That means you and your friends weren't actually sailing on a real boat, but you were pretending to do so.

So, "WERE" is just a word that we use to talk about things that happened in the past or things that we are pretending to happen.
