West Nile virus

West Nile virus is a tiny, invisible germ that can make people and animals very sick. It's like a little bug that crawls into your body and causes problems.

Just like how some kids get a cold or the flu, people and animals can also get sick from West Nile virus. It mostly comes from mosquitoes who have bitten a bird that has the virus. When the mosquito bites you or an animal, it can spread the virus and make you sick.

The virus can cause a fever, headache, and body aches. Sometimes it can make people feel really tired or even make it hard to breathe. Other times, it might not make you feel sick at all. But if you do get sick, it's important to go see a doctor to make sure you get better.

The good news is that not everyone who gets bitten by a mosquito with West Nile virus gets sick. And there are things you can do to protect yourself. Using bug spray with an ingredient called DEET can help keep mosquitoes away. Wearing long sleeves and pants can also help prevent mosquito bites. And if you have a mosquito problem in your house, make sure to get rid of standing water (like in a puddle) where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs.

Remember, just like how you wash your hands to prevent getting germs, being careful with mosquitoes can help keep you healthy too!
