Western is a genre of stories, books, movies, and TV shows that takes place in the American West from the 1800s. The main characters in a western story are often cowboys and they often ride horses, shoot guns, and wear cowboy hats and boots. In some westerns, the main characters try to help people who are in trouble or are being attacked by bad guys. In other westerns, the main characters fight each other as they compete to solve a mystery or problem. Many westerns feature characters who live in the Wild West and its deserts, forests, and mountains. Popular Western stories include John Wayne's The Shootist, John Ford's My Darling Clementine, and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven.
