ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Whim (mining)

Whim mining is when humans use an animal or machine to pull a cart or wagon up a steep hill or slope to mine for valuable minerals or rocks. Think of it like playing tug-of-war with a big wagon filled with treasure up a mountain.

So, there are some places where people can find precious things like gold, silver or coal, but those places are often on steep hills or mountains. To get to those places, people need to pull heavy stuff up and down the hill. That's where a whim comes in.

A whim is like a big wheel with a rope connected to it. People attach the rope to a cart or a wagon filled with the stuff they want to mine and then make the whim move by pulling or pushing it. The wheel rotates and it makes the rope move, which in turn moves the wagon. The person or animal pulling the whim makes sure that the cart or wagon doesn't fall down the hill or go too fast.

Whim mining has been around for centuries and was used in many different countries to mine for different things. Nowadays, we use machines instead of animals to pull the wheel, but the principle remains the same. So, the next time you see a big wheel, remember that it might have been used to pull a cart up a mountain to find gold or other precious things!
