Whipping boy

A whipping boy was a boy who was chosen to be punished in place of a prince or other royal when the prince misbehaved. The punishment was usually something like whipping or spanking, which is why they were called whipping boys. The idea was that if the prince knew that someone else would be punished for his misbehavior, he would be less likely to misbehave.
