White spaces (radio)

White spaces (radio) are areas of the radio spectrum that are temporarily not being used by anyone. They are called 'white spaces' because if you were to draw a picture of all the frequencies on a piece of paper, the unused ones would look like white spaces between the ones that are being used. Governments allow companies to create special types of radios that can use these white spaces. This allows businesses to set up their own wireless networks and create new technologies like video streaming without having to buy any expensive radio spectrum from the government.
