Yokohama-e

Yokohama-e is a special type of Japanese art that is made using a special kind of printing process called woodblock printing. This printing process is different from modern printing methods that you might see in your books or magazines.

First, an artist makes a drawing on a piece of paper. Then, the drawing is transferred onto a block of wood. Using special tools, the areas that are not meant to be printed are carved away, leaving a raised surface that can be inked.

Next, the block is inked with special paints called pigments, which are made from natural materials like minerals and plants. The block is then placed onto a piece of paper and pressed down firmly with a special tool called a baren. This leaves an impression of the raised surface on the paper, creating a unique, one-of-a-kind print.

Yokohama-e prints are often colorful and show scenes of everyday life in Japan during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Some yokohama-e prints show famous landscapes or buildings, while others show people doing daily activities like cooking or playing games. These prints are a special part of Japanese art history and are treasured for their beauty and uniqueness.
