ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Zooplankton

Okay kiddo, so first we need to understand that there are tiny creatures living in the water called plankton. Plankton are small living things that float around in the water and are food for other animals like fish and whales.

Now, zooplankton are a special kind of plankton that are made up of tiny animals instead of plants. These animals are so small that you can't see them with your eyes! They include things like tiny shrimp, jellyfish, and crustaceans.

Zooplankton are really important because they are at the bottom of the food chain in the ocean. This means that lots of other animals depend on zooplankton for food. In fact, without zooplankton, many of the larger animals that we love to watch like whales and dolphins, would not survive!

Zooplankton are also important because they help keep the ocean healthy. They eat things like bacteria and other small creatures that can make the water dirty. This helps keep the ocean clean for all the other animals that live there.

So, in simple terms, zooplankton are tiny, floating animals that are really important for other animals to eat and for keeping the ocean clean and healthy!
