ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Primary production

Hello there! Imagine you have a garden and you want to grow some vegetables, but you can't just magically make them appear. Instead, you need to plant some seeds, give them water and sunlight, and wait for them to grow. This process of making new things from raw materials is called production.

In the natural world, the process of primary production is a bit like gardening. Instead of vegetables, though, we're talking about plants and other organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis. This means they use the energy from sunlight to turn simple things like carbon dioxide and water into complex sugars and other organic compounds that they can use for energy and growth.

Plants aren't the only organisms that do this, though. Some bacteria and other single-celled organisms can also produce their own food in this way. And when these primary producers grow and reproduce, they provide the base of the food chain for all the other organisms in an ecosystem. So without primary production, there would be no food for other living things to eat, and the whole ecosystem would collapse.

So when we talk about primary production, we're really talking about the process of creating new organic compounds from raw materials using the power of the sun. It's kind of like gardening, but on a much bigger scale, and without the need for a trowel and a watering can!
