ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

elastin

Okay kiddo, do you know what rubber bands are made of? They stretch and bounce back, right? Well, our body also has something like that called elastin. It's a type of protein that helps our skin and tissues to stretch and then go back to their original shape.

Elastin is really important for your body because it helps your skin stretch when you grow, like when you go from being a baby to a big kid. It also helps your skin bounce back after you move around, like when you jump or do cartwheels.

But, as you can imagine, elastin can get tired and less springy as we get older. That’s why sometimes older people can have more wrinkles or saggy skin.

Luckily, there are ways we can try to keep our elastin healthy, like wearing sunscreen to protect our skin from the sun, eating healthy food, and exercising.
