ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

-stan

Okay kiddo, so -stan is a suffix that you sometimes see at the end of a bunch of words like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. This means that -stan is something that those places have in common.

- Stan means "land of" in Persian, a language spoken in Iran and some other countries. So when you put -stan at the end of a word, it means "land of" that thing.

For example, Afghanistan means "land of the Afghans," Pakistan means "land of the pure," and Kazakhstan means "land of the Kazakhs."

So when you see a country that ends with -stan, you know that it's a place where a certain group of people live. It's just like your house is "land of your family" and your school is "land of the learners."

Does that make sense, kiddo?
