1944 Romanian coup d'état

Okay, so in 1944, there was a big change that happened in Romania. It was called a "coup d'état," which is a fancy way of saying that some people took over the government.

Now, before we talk about the coup, we have to know a little bit about the government in Romania at the time. The leader was a man named Ion Antonescu, and he was working with a group of people called the Axis Powers. This group included Germany, Italy, and Japan, and they were fighting against another group of countries called the Allies.

But some people in Romania didn't like how Antonescu was working with the Axis Powers. They wanted Romania to switch sides and join the Allies instead. These people included politicians, military leaders, and regular citizens who were unhappy with the way things were going.

So, on August 23, 1944, these people got together and decided to do something about it. They organized a plan to take over the government and get Antonescu out of power. They even got help from the Allies, who were happy to have Romania on their side.

When the day came, the conspirators (that's what we call the people who plan a coup) went to Antonescu and tried to get him to step down peacefully. But he didn't want to, so they had to use force to get him out of power.

After the coup, Romania joined the Allies and started fighting against the Axis Powers. The country went through a lot of changes over the next few years, but the coup in 1944 was a big moment that helped set them on a new path.
