ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

1979 oil crisis

In 1979, there was a big problem with the oil that we use to power cars and other machines. The problem was that the countries that we usually get our oil from were really mad at us, so they decided to stop selling us as much oil as we needed. This made it really hard for people to get around or use machines that need oil to work, like tractors or airplanes. It was kind of like if your friend had a toy that you really wanted to play with, but they decided not to share it with you anymore.

Because there wasn't enough oil to go around, the prices of the oil that we could buy went up a lot. This made everything that used oil more expensive, like gas for cars or oil for heating homes. People had to pay a lot more money just to use the same amount of oil that they were used to using before.

This made a lot of people very upset because they liked being able to travel and use machines without having to spend as much money. Some people even had to stop doing things they loved, like taking long car trips or getting to work easily, because it was just too expensive.

Lots of people tried to find other ways to get around or use machines, like using bicycles or electric cars, but those things weren't as common or easy to use back then. Eventually, the countries selling us oil started to sell us more again and the prices went back down, but people never forgot how hard it was to live without enough oil.
