ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Abolitionism

Abolitionism is the belief that slavery should be completely abolished and overturned. It was a movement started in the 1700s, when people began to realize that the way slaves were being treated was wrong and wanted to stop it. It took hundreds of years, but in the end, slavery was finally outlawed in the United States in 1865. Abolitionists were brave people who worked hard to make sure everyone was treated equally and had their basic human rights. Even though slavery is illegal now, people are still working to make sure everyone in the world has equal rights and opportunities.
