Academic freedom means that your teachers, professors and other school people are free to talk openly about different ideas and topics in classes. This means they can give their honest opinion and help you learn how to think for yourself and form your own opinion. This is important because it allows us to figure out difficult topics and problems by looking at different ideas and ways of thinking.
