ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Speech code

A speech code is like a set of rules about what people can and cannot say. Just like how your teacher might have a set of rules in your classroom about how you should behave, there are places like schools or workplaces that have speech codes. These codes tell people what they can and can't say to each other at that place.

For example, imagine you have a treehouse where you like to hang out with your friends. Your club might have a rule that telling lies is not okay, or that you can't say mean things to others. These rules about speaking are like speech codes.

Sometimes speech codes are good because they help people feel safe and respected. But sometimes they can be bad if they are too strict and stop people from saying what they really think or feel. It's important for speech codes to find a balance between protecting people and still allowing freedom of speech.
