An accelerometer is a little device that helps you measure how much movement or shaking is happening. Imagine you are standing up and someone pushes you, you might feel a little bit dizzy or off balance. That’s because you moved! When an accelerometer is inside a phone, for example, it can measure how much it’s getting moved around. It can detect when you’re running, walking, or even when you’re shaking your phone just a little bit. This information is then used by the phone to do things like change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape, count your steps, or even help you play games that require you to tilt or move your phone around. It works similarly to a level tool where you can tell if something is straight or not, but instead of detecting a slope, an accelerometer can detect just about any kind of movement.
