Acid rain happens when some bad stuff gets into the air and mixes with the raindrops that come from clouds, making it extra dirty and harmful. This bad stuff is called pollutants, and they come from many things, like cars or factories, that burn things like coal or gasoline.
When those pollutants go up into the sky, they become part of the clouds and mix with the water in them. Later, when the raindrops form, they take those pollutants down to the ground with them.
And when this polluted rain falls on trees, plants, rivers, and lakes, it can really hurt them! That's because the rain becomes a little bit like a dangerous acid that can damage living things.
This makes it hard for the trees and plants to grow, can make rivers and lakes so acidic that the fish can't live in them anymore, and it can even hurt buildings and structures that get exposed to it over time.
So it's very important to try to stop the things that create this bad pollution, so that we can help keep the rain clean and our environment healthy!
