Acid value

Okay kiddo, so when we talk about acid value, we're actually talking about how much acid is in something. Do you remember how we talked about acids in our lemonade experiment? Well, just like how lemons are acidic, other things like oils and fats can also have acid in them.

Now, the acid in oils and fats is different from the acid in lemons because it's not safe for us to eat or drink. So, when people want to use oils and fats for cooking or making things like soap, they need to know how much acid is in them so they can make sure they're using the right amount.

Scientists can figure out the acid value by doing a special test. They take a little bit of the oil or fat and mix it with a chemical that reacts with the acid. They measure how much of the chemical is used up, and that tells them how much acid was in the sample.

So, the acid value is just a way for people to know how much acid is in oils and fats so they can use them safely.
