Administrative divisions of France

Alright kiddo! So, France is a big country with lots of people living in it. In order to help everyone get the things they need from the government, the country is divided up into smaller areas called administrative divisions.

The first level of division is called a region, and there are 13 regions in France. Each region has its own government that makes decisions about things that are important to the people who live there, like schools, hospitals, and roads.

Inside of each region, there are smaller areas called departments. There are 96 departments in France and they're named after rivers, mountains or historic territories. Like the regions, departments also have their own government that makes decisions about local things like zoning laws and building permits.

Finally, each department is divided into smaller areas called communes. Communes are like towns or cities, and there are over 35,000 of them in France. Each commune has its own mayor and town council that makes decisions about things like parks, libraries, and police departments.
