ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aether (classical element)

Aether is an idea that some ancient people believed in. They thought that everything in the world was made up of four different things that they called the "elements." These were earth, air, fire, and water.

Later on, some people also believed in a fifth element called aether. They thought that aether was a magical substance that was different from all the other elements. It was supposed to be invisible and weightless, and it was thought to be everywhere in the world.

People who believed in aether thought that it explained many things that they couldn't understand otherwise. They thought that it was what made light travel through space, and they thought that it was what allowed the planets to move.

But as time went on, scientists began to realize that aether wasn't actually real. They figured out that things like light and planets could be explained by other things, like gravity and electromagnetic waves. So today, we don't really believe in aether anymore. It's just a really old idea that people used to have.
