ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

African theatre of World War I

Okay, so a long time ago there was a really big war called World War I. It was a very big fight between a lot of different countries, and it lasted for many years. One part of this big war was called the African theatre, which means that some of the fighting happened in Africa.

Now, in Africa, there were many countries that were controlled by bigger, more powerful countries from Europe. These powerful countries decided to use their African colonies to help them in the war. They wanted to show that they were the best and strongest countries in the world, and they thought that having their colonies fight for them would help them win the war.

So people from all over Africa were forced to fight in this war, even though they had nothing to do with the fighting that was happening in Europe. They were made to join the army and go fight in places like Tanzania, Cameroon, and Togo. Some of them were forced to work as porters or carriers, carrying heavy things like weapons and supplies.

The fighting in Africa was very difficult and dangerous. The soldiers had to deal with things like heat, diseases, and dangerous animals like crocodiles and snakes. They also had to fight against other soldiers who were trying to kill them. Many people died in this war, both soldiers and innocent African civilians.

In the end, the war ended and the powerful countries from Europe went back to ruling over their African colonies. But the Africans who fought in the war never forgot what happened to them. They remembered how they were forced to fight in a war that wasn't theirs, and how many of their friends and family members died because of it.
