ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

After the Ball (Kirk and Madsen book)

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard the phrase "coming out of the closet"? It means telling people that you're not straight, that you like people of the same gender as you.

Well, the book "After the Ball" talks about something called "gay propaganda." Now, propaganda is when people try to convince other people of something, and they might not be telling the whole truth.

In this case, the authors of the book wanted to make people think that being gay is okay and normal. They did this by using things like movies, TV shows, and news stories to show that gay people are just like everyone else.

They also talked about something called "advertising." Have you ever seen an ad on TV for a toy or a snack? That's advertising! In the case of "After the Ball," the authors wanted to advertise being gay in a positive way.

So basically, the book is about how to make people more accepting of gay people. They thought that if they showed gay people in a good light in movies and on TV and talked about it positively in the news, then more people would be okay with it.
