Agriculture in Mesoamerica

Agriculture in Mesoamerica means the way people in Mexico and Central America grew their own food a long, long time ago.

They did not have supermarkets or grocery stores, so they had to figure out how to get enough food to eat all by themselves.

One way they did this was by growing corn, beans, and squash. They would plant the corn in the ground, then put the beans and squash around it. The beans would climb up the corn stalks and the squash would spread over the ground, protecting it from the sun. This way, they could grow three different crops in one spot!

Mesoamericans also used irrigation to water their crops. This means they dug canals to bring water from nearby rivers or lakes to their fields. They also used terracing to farm on steep hillsides. They would build steps in the hillside and flatten the soil out on each step to make a flat field.

They also used a special farming tool called a "coa" to till the soil. This was a long stick with a flat, pointed end that they could use to break up the soil and plant seeds.

Finally, Mesoamerican farmers used the sun and moon to know when to plant and harvest their crops. They made a calendar based on the movements of these celestial bodies so they knew when the seasons would change and when the best time was to plant and when to harvest.

So, in summary, Mesoamericans grew their own food by planting different crops together, using irrigation and terracing, using special farming tools like the coa, and using the sun and moon to know when to plant and harvest.
