ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aircraft engine

Airplanes use engines to move and stay in the air. An aircraft engine is like a magic box that creates power to make the airplane go forward. It is a machine that works using fuel, just like a car or a motorcycle.

When the pilot wants the airplane to move, they push a button and start the engine. The engine sucks in air from outside and mixes it with fuel, which is like filling up a gas tank. Then, it turns the air and fuel mixture into energy by lighting it on fire. The energy creates a lot of pressure, and this makes a part called a piston move up and down really fast, like pushing a toy car across the floor.

As the piston moves, it turns a big rod called a crankshaft, which is connected to the airplane's propeller. The propeller is like a big fan, and it spins around and around, making the airplane go forward. Just like when you blow up a balloon and let it go, the energy from the engine makes the airplane move through the air.

There are many different kinds of airplane engines, but they all work in a similar way. Some are small and light for little airplanes, and some are big and powerful for big airplanes that carry lots of people and cargo. Without a good engine, a plane cannot fly and stay in the sky.
